Unwanted hair can cause significant stress, anxiety, depression, and reduced quality of life. In one study, 75% of women with unwanted facial hair reported clinical levels of anxiety. Most techniques like waxing, shaving, and electrolysis are either temporary or have painful side effects.

Laser hair removal has become one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the world. However not all laser hair removal treatments offer the same level of benefits.

The new gold standard in permanent reduction of unwanted hair is the Aerolase Neo Elite Laser which will permanently reduce hair on all skin types with no pain or side effects. The Neo Elite is a revolutionary Nd:YAG 1064-nm laser with a 650-microsecond pulse duration — shorter than the thermal relaxation time of the skin tissue surrounding the follicle. As a result, the heat is effectively sealed within the follicle since it doesn’t have time to conduct outward to the surrounding skin.

About laser hair removal

Diode Laser hair removal technology delivers the optimal light wavelength (810nm) in order to reduce unwanted hair. The light is then absorbed by the melanin or pigment that is present in the hair follicle and hair root. As a result of this heating action, the hair destroys its ability to grow. Significantly, as darker hair contains more melanin, it absorbs more light.

We recommend to repeat treatments to ensure that the hairs are targeted at the optimal time during their natural hair growth cycle in order to diminish them.

During a consultation with our doctor, the areas of hair growth which concern you will be discussed as well as whether your hair type is suitable for treatment with laser.

Darker hair colours on fairer skin types respond best to laser hair removal treatment, with blonde, white or red hair colours being harder to treat and remove long term.

individuals with darker, brown or black skin types (Fitzpatrick types V and VI) are not suitable for treatment with diode laser as the skin absorbs the light and can cause scarring. Alternative solutions may be available.

Excess hair or hirsutism is caused, in some instances, by an underlying medical condition or hormonal imbalance. Women with a condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) are especially prone to growing unwanted hair on their face, arms and other areas and are ideal candidates for laser treatment as this is rarely available via the NHS.

Those taking photo-sensitising medicines will not be suitable for laser treatments. If you have a recent suntan or sunburn, or are currently wearing a fake tanning product, it is likely that your treatment will have to be delayed so that the darker pigment can fade.

If you are pregnant or currently breastfeeding you will not be suitable for laser treatment and will need to wait to await the period of weaning your child before we can embark on a treatment plan.

You will need to shave the area to be treated before your visit. A thin layer of a special gel will be applied to the area being treated. This acts to both guide the treatment head as the laser light is delivered, and also provides additional protection for the surface of the skin.

The laser hair removal machine has a built-in cooling system, making the treatment more comfortable. The head of the device has a large spot size, meaning big patches of hair can be treated at once, reducing treatment time in comparison to other systems.

You will also be asked to wear special protective glasses during treatment, in order to prevent the light from damaging your eyes.

The duration of the procedure depends on how many parts of the face (or body) are to be treated, starting from 5 minutes for just one part of the face, up to half an hour for the entire face. There is no recovery time required and it is possible to return to normal activities within a few hours.

Repeat treatment sessions are performed every four to 6-8 weeks during a course of approximately 4 treatments, depending on the area being treated, so that we can be certain we are targeting each hair follicle as it reaches its optimal growing stage.

Most people do not find laser hair removal treatment to be uncomfortable and liken it to the sensation of someone flicking your skin. With the skin cooling system built in the laser head, our laser hair reduction treatment is virtually painless.

You should expect some redness and mild swelling in the area treated, which will disappear after a few hours. The skin may also feel itchy for a short period of time. There is a risk of superficial burns from a laser treatment, but it is extremely rare.

Laser treatment will permanently reduce hair growth with noticeable reduction after the first couple of treatment sessions. We use the term hair reduction rather than permanent hair removal since hormonal changes, ageing and other medical factors, can affect future hair growth. Most people however, experience almost complete hair removal from a full course of laser treatment.

Laser treatment will permanently reduce hair growth in the area treated and is expected to last for several years, or permanently, depending on the various biological factors mentioned above.
